Mike pulls out the old Palm keyboard…. and this is what we have to look forward to for the iPad. We skipped a week and jumped right into the Olympics… the cold ones. Harold tells us what he loves about the Olympics. Aside from the superiority, he likes the tech. Building tracks and ghosting skiers.

Second Segment: We remember crucial.com as a great way to find new mempory. Mike incorrectly names another RAM site, but it’s actually http://www.dealram.com/ We also discuss the accuracy of the measurement systems in the Olympics.

Third Segment: It snowed in all 50 states at once this week. Harold discusses how to learn to program in a new computer language. There’s a great little language called SmallBasic. http://www.smallbasic.com Brought to you by Microsoft.

We looked at the association between the different types of control you might find in computer systems, from embedded systems, like the embroiled Toyota gas pedal, to cloud computing, ala Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming, to programming your own interface.

Harold buys a Mac Mini in order to develop software for the iPhone. (That’s right… I said “Harold”). Star Trek’s Massively Multiplayer Online game drops and we’re interested in why that’s so important. Also, we talk about embedded systems and where you might find them in your daily life.

Everybody knows how to use their browser… but not everybody uses it the same way. Today we talk about the different ways people use – and misuse – the browser.

For instance, you can certainly type “http://www.easttexasdailynews.com” into the little blank on the Yahoo! page, but that just means you’re searching for information on that page. Typing it into the Address bar is the right way to go. But many search engine companies and toolbar companies have purposely made it confusing in order to get you to use their search engine.

In this vein, Harold shares his new find “Let Me Google That For You!” – lmgtfy.com. It’s a fun place to go if someone is always asking you questions that are just a “Google” away.

Some chatter about “email obfuscation”… Harold will post a link below to an interesting EO article.

Also, new technology to look for in 2010, or maybe just older technologies coming to fruition…like Thorium based nuclear reactors…

This is the first podcast of 2010 and it looks to us(and most of the rest of the world) to be a better year for all the way around.

Sam(a good friend and avid Computer101 Fan) sent us a question and posted a comment. We were almost beside ourselves.

The answer to Sam’s question about what is the name of the product that replaces Microsoft Exchange Server. The answer to that is Zimbra. There is a Free version and a For Pay version that does a really good job at hosting your email. I have setup up a number of these last year and currently setting up a new installation at this very moment.

Sam also mentioned Vistaprint in a comment during one of our “Free” shows. The only real problem with some of these “Free” products is that they tend to be a bit annoying with “reminding” you of greatness of the product you just received.

During the show we mentioned that there were ways to make your email address a little less spammy when displaying that info on a webpage. Mike and I thought that some of these ideas were pretty clever.

Head on over to tilllate.com and check out the coolness.

As far as next year goes: I think the “cloud” has a way to go before it is ready for the mainstream. Can’t wait to see the Apple iTouch on Steroids, and chompin at the bit to get a Thorium Reactor at my house.

We want to know what you want to know. Email us! Let us know how you think we’re doing and what you’d like to hear about. We want to talk about the computer stuff you’re interested in!

Take care,

Mike gets distracted talking about Wal-marts new computer service desk. Getting back on track… look to upgrade your computer for an inexpensive gift to the family. If you buy a computer, get support for the life of the box. $399 is close to the lowest cost for a good computer. Be careful of nickels and dimes, but $1000 PC will last you several years. Netbooks are catching on. Great as a second computer.

Voice Over IP is the word of the day. We also talk about messenger issues. Skype is a pretty good deal. Harold discovers Boxee.tv. for all your media needs. Mike contracts the H2O flu and starts grossing everyone out with his home remedies. Harold orders a Dell Mini 9 to turn it into a Mac. Finally. And Mike admits he’d go refurb on a new computer. That’s a first! (Mike is having mic problems. Turns out he put the microphone in backwards and hasn’t noticed it… So, he’s talking into the back of it. Duh.)
